The Meaning of the Holidays

Each year, a staff committee at Y.O.U., Inc. takes on the project of raising dollars and donations so that the children in our programs will have a more special Christmas holiday. The scope of Adopt-A-Child is enormous and there are countless volunteers who give of their time. This year, although we granted three wishes each to 730 children in our care, the story below stands above the rest.

When Sandy from Northboro called Y.O.U., Inc. to adopt a child for the holidays, she was asked to buy three gifts for Amy, a 16 year-old girl from our After School Program. When Sandy went to the mall to shop for Amy, she was accompanied by her own 16 year-old daughter. When her daughter realized that the three small items that Amy had requested were the only presents she would get for Christmas, she became very upset and began crying. She simply could not believe that these modest gifts were the only ones that Amy would receive. On the spot, she told her mom that she wanted to use the remainder of her own Christmas shopping money to purchase additional gifts for Amy, which she did.

When Sandy delivered the gifts to Y.O.U., Inc., she thanked us for helping to teach her daughter the true meaning of Christmas.
