At Cottage Hill Academy, the admissions process gives our staff the opportunity to thoroughly assess the needs of a child in order to determine whether or not placement at our facility is the best possible fit for treatment. The admissions process is initiated by an involved caregiver, such as a family member, state agency employee, or school personnel, who sends a referral packet to the admissions department. A referral packet contains background information about the child in the form of DCF assessments, CANS assessments, discharge summaries and reports from previous programs, psychological assessments, a current IEP, an immunization record, insurance information, and medical history. Referrals are read by the Admissions Director promptly upon arrival and an interview is arranged at the convenience of the prospective resident and her caregiver. Interviews typically take place on campus, which is ideal as it gives the child and caregiver the opportunity to tour the campus and assess the appropriateness of the placement. Those for whom it is a hardship to travel to our campus may be interviewed at a location more convenient, such as a current program, hospital, or home. Following the interview, the prospective resident’s information is reviewed by the Cottage Hill Management Team, who then makes a collaborative decision as to whether or not placement is appropriate for a particular child. Decisions are typically made within 24-48 hours after an interview. After a client has been accepted to Cottage Hill Academy, an intake date is promptly scheduled at a time convenient for the child and her caregiver. If all necessary paperwork for the intake has already been received, it is possible to schedule this date within the same week as the notification of acceptance to our program.
