Dynamy Youth Academy student and South High junior Richmond Slemyon -- pictured at left with Etel Cappachione, Youth Academy's Director -- was recently honored for his submission to the Children’s League of Massachusetts’ Second Annual Art Contest. Richmond’s exceptional work – a distinctive combined illustration of two characters from the Bluford Series books for teens shown above – was chosen from over 100 entries as runner up in the Creative Expression category, and is currently on display on the Children’s League website.
Richmond immigrated to the United States at the age of six with his mother and brothers, and just two months later slipped into a coma as the result of kidney failure. A subsequent kidney transplant resulted in some learning delays, and Richmond received special education services during his grammar school years. Yet despite these significant setbacks, this talented and determined young man has seized every opportunity to improve his education – including enrolling in Youth Academy at Y.O.U., Inc.’s Dynamy program. Youth Academy students receive a comprehensive range of college access/college preparatory services, and participate in countless leadership, community service, and personal development activities.
In addition to his Youth Academy commitments, Richmond is a strong student taking a mix of Honors and AP classes at South, newly employed in a part-time restaurant job, and looking forward to studying Criminal Justice in college -- to prepare for a highly unique career as a sketch artist.
We’d say he’s well on his way to that ultimate goal!
