The Worcester Institute on Loss and Trauma

On December 2, 1999, Worcester was stunned by the loss of six firefighters
in a fire that destroyed the Worcester Cold Storage Warehouse. This event, like other catastrophic losses, struck a universal cord that resulted in an outpouring of support and sympathy from around the world.

The Worcester community lacked a system and comprehensive way to help those who had suffered both directly and indirectly from the loss and trauma that resulted from this event.

It was out of this tragedy the Worcester Institute on Loss and Trauma was created.  Beginning in
December 1999 through February 2000, Dr. Marjorie Cahn worked tirelessly with the leadership of Youth Opportunities Upheld (Y.O.U.), Inc. and the University of Massachusetts Medical School, Department of Psychiatry to develop the purpose and structu\re of the Institute.

In March 2000 a diverse group of professionals came together to plan the first conference, entitled “Catastrophe: Community Impact and Healing” was held on October 20, 2000.  Conferences continued
to be held annually thereafter.
