Teen Pregnancy Prevention & Support

Teen Pregnancy Prevention

Voices with Choices is a teen pregnancy prevention program, specializing in workshops for students and informational sessions for parents and professionals in the Southbridge community who work with youth. Voices provides youth, parents, schools and community providers with accurate, age-appropriate information about teen sexual health, healthy relationships, self-esteem, healthy decision making, and goal setting. The program’s main goal is to prevent early sexual activity, early and unplanned pregnancies, STDs and HIV/AIDS among adolescents and teens in the Southbridge area – which has one of the highest teen pregnancy rates in the state.

Supports for Pregnant & Parenting Teens

The Pregnant & Parenting Teen program provides supportive services to pregnant and parenting teens which include: skilled nursing support, school and home visits, counselling and crisis intervention, case management, prenatal and teen mother support groups, life skills and parenting education, transportation, and social service advocacy/referral. The program staff includes a Registered Nurse, as well as case managers/counselors.

Case management and nursing services may include assisting the teen and her family to arrange obstetric medical care, educating the expectant teen around healthy diet, proper prenatal care, healthy fetal development, and childbirth preparation. The nurse and case managers help to connect the teen to any additional community and therapeutic resources which may be needed to ensure a healthy pregnancy and full-term birth, and also strive to keep young fathers engaged and active in preparing for the birth and parenting. The staff work proactively to keep teens enrolled in school, and many times assist the expectant teen in accessing tutoring or other academic supports, basic life skills such as budgeting and arranging for child care, and GED classes when necessary.

At the same time, the staff consult with school administrators to identify teens considered at high risk for becoming pregnant, and work proactively to educate those teens about pregnancy prevention and safe sex practices in order to prevent unplanned first pregnancies or repeat pregnancies.
