Description

The Summer Youth Employment Training Programs provides youth with the tools necessary to become successful in the world of work. Participants complete the program when they have obtained one or more of the following goals: obtainment of skills outlined in training program, obtainment of a GED, remained/returned to school, increased academic competencies, obtainment of employment, or entered other training relevant to his/her career goals.

Population

At-risk youth between the ages of 14-21, economically disadvantaged, residing in one of the three geographical areas.

Services

Uxbridge: Participants apply academic skills to the world of work through a paid work experience, 20 hours per week, 5 weeks in the summer. Participants gain skills in the areas of landscaping/carpentry, human/public services, and public speaking. This program serves bother in-school and out-of-school youth from the community.

Southbridge: Participants take part in Home Health Aid training through a 5 week training class. Through the skill obtained, participants leave the program to pursue employment in a health-related field. Throughout the course participants receive CPR and First Aid Certification. This program serves out-of-school youth from the community.

McGrath Educational Center: Participants take part in project based activities. Participants functioning at a grade level equivalency above 8.9 take part in Occupational Training Activities, which include Technology, Culinary Arts, Home Health Aid, and Business/Office skills. Those participants functioning at a grade level equivalency below 8.9 take part in academically enriching activities and projects centered on a Reading Camp, Carpentry/Woodworking, Senior Citizens and Computers, and Landscaping/Grounds. This program primarily serves students of McGrath Educational Center, but also accepts youth from the community.
