Description

The Mentoring Program provides services for court-involved and at-risk adolescents from the community. A mentor is a volunteer or intern who is trained to work one-on-one with a child and can make a difference in that child’s life. Mentors are positive role models and help to build strong self-esteem. Mentors guide the child in school performance, encourage participation in sports and activities and teach new skills.

Mentors can develop and strengthen their communication skills and techniques for guiding adolescents. They contribute to a better community and enhance their resume. Mentors must be 18 years of age and have access to a car. Bilingual skills are a plus, but not required. The commitment is 2-6 hours per week for a minimum of six months.

Population

The program accepts youth who are at-risk or court involved. The court involved cases range from CHINS (Stubborn child, runaways, and truancy) to delinquent cases. The at-risk cases include youth that are struggling with individual and family problems such as peer pressure, abuse, and failure in school. The program accepts referrals that referred from Worcester Juvenile Court, DSS, Worcester Public Schools, CAPS, parents and other Y.O.U., Inc. Programs. The program is free for all participants because the program receives funding through the generous support of the United Way of Central Mass.
