What
is a Mentor?
A mentor is a person who makes a difference in someone’s
life. A mentor is a volunteer or intern
who is selected and trained to work both individually
and in a group with adolescents.
What does
a Mentor do?
A mentor is a positive role model for the adolescent
and will help him or her to build strong self-esteem.
An effective mentor guides the adolescent in school
performance, teaches them new skills,
and may encourage them to participate in sports or
other activities.
What
are the requirements to be a Mentor?
Mentors must be at least 18 years of age, have access
to a car, provide three letters of recommendation,
and have 2 to 6 hours per week to spend in the program.
Creativity and
responsibility are special traits. Bilingual skills
are a plus, but are not required.
What
are the benefits of being a Mentor?
By becoming a mentor you will develop your communicative
abilities and learn techniques to
positively influence and direct behaviors of adolescents.
You will help to build a better community
while enhancing your resume with volunteer work. Most
importantly, you will have the rewarding
experience of helping a child!
